RE: Random thoughts post 'em - Rares - 01-18-2018 (01-18-2018, 04:20 AM)Shadow Step Wrote: You know what, random thought two, hilarious having some asshole in FiMfiction berating me for having a "headcanon" (what my mares have told me of their world) and how it's "superseded by the actual canon" and I have "no creative say in the show." Like I give one solitary fuck about the show any more. XD This is why I say what I do about canon really holding no meaning at all except what you want it to. At face value, the show is merely there to entertain you, let what you want to be canon. Ultimately, it shouldn't really matter. Hell there are entire episodes that I just flat out say "Nope" to and just disregard them. Hell there are entire episodes that I just flat out say "Nope" to and just disregard them. The show was a jumping off point for my girls. They exist entirely independently, and while there are similarities there are many more differences. I feel the show, especially in later seasons, is handled poorly by writers who look at it as just a kid's show. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but I don't think Faust looked at the show like that, so there's an obvious disconnect in some episodes and some of the lore. Even with that though there are things here that are completely different even than parts of the show I like, so it's not simply me preferring one season or set of writers to another. My issues with the show are their own independent thing. I like the episodes, for a while the episode 1 and 2 were my literal favorites of the series. That doesn't change the fact that there is no Spike here, it's Barb, and she was like 15 when she and Twilight moved to Ponyville. Fluttershy wasn't like, "Oh, cute dragon!" she was actually a little terrified, which made Barb feel bad. So, when I say "I don't give a fuck about the canon any more" it's not specifically because I'm disregarding things I don't like, but rather I have my own "canon" as it were and it's entirely independent of the show. And some guys on FiMfic having a boner for "Well the writers said in an interview" just makes me want to laugh at them. RE: Random thoughts post 'em - OZ the pony - 01-19-2018 Well ... indeed ... we have over thousand pony fan . Show canon only have one ... and writer also could change their mind anytime . Treat show canon as law could take entire fan into danger place . If writer copy a fanfiction into show , the fanfiction can become a canon , is not the problem make sense , the show canon or not really depending on if it is in the show or not ... like season 5 Episode 9 , fanon finally in the show , but even writer didn't do that ... fan is still have threir own canon . So when you recognize the different between canon and other independent , you'll know show canon is not really 100% law . I remember reading stories on FiMfic about the Mane Six being superheroes in an AU, and then what happened next season? Why an entire episode about them being super heroes. And it's not like with how many writers we've had come and go they've kept perfect canon themselves. I groaned when Rainbow Dash in one of the recent seasons was like, "I pranked Fluttershy!" you know, after in the very first season she was written to say she would never do that because she's been friends with Fluttershy forever and knows how much that would affect her? The writers are flawed humans and trying to take the show's canon as some immutable law is silly in its own way. But trying to convince the kind of people who stalk Lauren Faust's twitter for tidbits so they can say, "Well, she said this about the show, so it's totally canon." never ends well. RE: Random thoughts post 'em - Pacifist - 01-19-2018 Canon is what you make of it. Everyone has their own headcanons, after all. Also I hope we get another Changeling ep next season. They're adorable now and I just want more of them. At the end of the day, the writers are still human. They can make fumble ups and screw ups, and some have openly admitted they know there are some who never watched the show. Sometimes it's just the truth that we know them better than the writers. Honestly to follow it as law, if that canon bothers you, is it really good for you? Derpy became "canon", but does that mean Rarity being an alicorn because she was for a few frames canon too? What about stupid gags? It's just too much to get picky about, and then the truth is, can you really give me a good reason as for the difference between fanfiction and a show writer? There isn't one, exceot one is just paid to do it. That's it. Sometimes it's just the truth that we know them better than the writers. The stuff with gags are great, because who remembers Rainbow Dash basically nuking a barn with no injury, and then later getting injured on basically nothing? Or how about when she fought a changeling army no problem, but when she encounters a villainous pony on an adventure she's captured without a fight? These are things that don't make sense, they exist because what's being watched is a cartoon and trying to force canon into logic won't work. I approached the discussion with logic, and we met with "It's a cartoon so all of the nonsense the writers say is gospel truth when it comes to ponies." No, it's not, fellow. Very often they make huge mistakes and ignore facts they've previously stated just to make an episode work. I will say that alicorn Rarity made for some amusing fanfictions during its course in the fandom. And I'm sure a dozen people were raging about it "just being a mistake" despite it making it to air. Things would be dreadfully dull if we only ever used the canon. At the very least the first season should be mandatory viewing for the new writers. I know they can't watch it all because time constraints, etc, but the first season covers the basics of the characters, establishes backstory on them and the world, it's simple compared to what they get up to today, but at least it would give them an idea of the characters so we don't have massive slip ups. But I think some just don't do anything. For example, one S7 episode that rather annoyed me quite a bit showed Rarity on a very close business relationship with Photo Finish, which was just ludicrous since they hadn't seen each other since that S1 episode and how Photo ignored her then. |
