RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - Kaltes-Herzeleid - 12-26-2017 Drive (2011). I must say I'm glad I watched Valhalla Rising first and found the interview where Nicolas Winding Refn discussed the fact that One-Eye and Driver are the same character, just in a different time. It really enhanced the viewing experience and made me far more well equipped to detect the reoccurring themes. Great movie. RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - Kaltes-Herzeleid - 01-04-2018 The Nice Guys (2016). Magnificently done buddy comedy action film with surprisingly strong themes of loss, bonding, the impending future and the oppressive and ruthless nature of corporate America. RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - Kaltes-Herzeleid - 01-07-2018 With Blood on My Hands: Pusher II (2004). Great movie, all I'll say without spoiling it. Better than the first. RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - Kaltes-Herzeleid - 01-12-2018 Only God Forgives (2013). ...Why did so many people hate this movie when it came out? This movie is pure fucking art. I apologize for not being able to give more in depth thoughts, but there's so much to process. A great piece of cinema through and through. RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - Kaltes-Herzeleid - 01-13-2018 Pusher III: I'm the Angel of Death (2005). Hmmm, I'd say I think this movie is decent. I feel this whole story is held back by the emphasis on trying too hard to be like the first in the series, only without the same level of bite and intensity. The whole thing could be summed as a role swap between Milo and Frank. The first worked so well because it was gritty and was a vicious de-glamorization of the drug and crime lifestyle that built to a bleak finale. The second was even better and was less of a drug movie and more of a somber, uncomfortable yet painfully understandable character study with a bloody conclusion. This one...well there is a theme of an older man trying desperately to compete with the younger generation and I think I'd like this one a lot more if it went all out with that concept instead of just glossing over it. That and I just don't think Milo is anywhere near as engaging of a character as the sleazy Frank or the sympathetic Tonny. Milo is just sort of...there. It picks up a bit during the end but alas, it just came too late for me. Not bad, but pales in contrast to its predecessors, especially in contrast to the second film. RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - Kaltes-Herzeleid - 01-26-2018 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). My third viewing of this movie, and overall I'd definitely say I like it and appreciate it far more than my initial two viewings back in 2014 or 2015. A pinnacle of effects and complex themes and philosophy woven into all. However I will clarify I don't absolutely love it though, there are plenty of moments where it drags and it honestly feels self indulgent (but given the film's technical achievements it is largely justifiable, but still can be tedious) and there's practically no real characters in the entire story aside from HAL and Dave. Still, worth watching, but not my favorite Kubrick movie in the end. RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - whobawhats - 01-27-2018 It Been meaning to see this one for awhile but never really had the chance. Even though it's supposed to be a scary movie I found it to be pretty funny and an overall enjoyable film. Definitely recommend checking It out RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - Sour Soul - 01-27-2018 (01-27-2018, 03:17 PM)whobawhats Wrote: Definitely recommend checking It out RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - Kaltes-Herzeleid - 01-28-2018 Antichrist (2009). One of the most unsettling and disturbing movies I've ever seen. I think I'll have to give it a re-watch before I can form any other coherent thoughts. I might start jotting down thoughts in a journal as I watch so I can properly keep track of my thoughts. RE: Movies just watched - Theatre V1 - Kaltes-Herzeleid - 02-08-2018 Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah (1991). It's been a long, long time since I've actually sat down ad watched this installment. Like, I haven't really seen this since 2008 or 2009. And...it's decent. No where near as atrocious as I remember it. Solid albeit slightly confusing story in which I'm pretty sure they were going for a stable time loop scenario. Though they didn't do the greatest of jobs at conveying that. I found the whole idea of evil corporate rivals going back in time to destroy Japan before it becomes a political and economic superpower only to more or less guarantee the country survives by forcing them into a desperate situation to be a surprisingly well developed and even profound plot point. People paradoxically create and destroy their own prosperity through ruthlessness, whether it be noble or sinister. The kaiju designs, battles and set pieces are all generally very well done; but are still a visible step down in quality in contrast to its two predecessors. Same goes for some of the acting..."Take that, you dinosaur!" still makes me wince and laugh to this day. While I still stand by my opinion that this is definitely not one of franchise's best, it's still far from being one of the worst. In fact I can say for certain I'm happy I gave it a second chance and re-watched it. |
