S1E26 The Best Night Ever

And I got to say, this is without a doubt, still the best season finale the show has. No need for a 2 parter, no "super action" or forced, drama, just a simple episode. And not only that, but it tied together quite a lot for the season I noticed. The "arc" of the gala was a little more thought out than anything else in other seasons, I feel.

And that was Season 1. Sure I think there might be a bit if nostalgia-vision to it, but honestly I still think it holds up as the best season. Not my favorite episodes, but a lot I still really enjoyed a lot, and reasons why I love the show.

Congrats on finishing the first season! I liked reading your thoughts on the episodes up to this point. Also, I agree! I think the first finale was really, really good, and it's my favourite episode of the show overall! Octavia shows up for the first time, so I'm a bit biased I have to admit. Twilight Smile

Keep up the good work!

S2E1 Return of Harmony Part 1.

It makes me feel a little down, because I see everything done right here, that isn't done well in any other premier or finale. How the Mane 6 are actually treated like a group, and although they were defeated, at least it was in separate ways, and wasn't just "Oh hey look at this super powerful magic monster". On top of that, Discord feels like such a better character, like a G-rated fun chaotic villain, where as modern reformed Discord feels more like a guy that makes too many pop culture references. What made him fun kinda went overdone.

Thank you! I appreciate that!

S2E2 Return of Harmony Part 2

Going off of what I said in Part 1, this really actually felt like one of the few times where the Mane 6 weren't just shoved to the side, yes they were defeated by Discord in Part 1, but it's not like they're forgotten about as the show seems to enjoy doing nowadays, they actually were still relevant and the conflict was still about them, as it should be. It was about the Mane 6 as friends, and how they're needed together, why they're needed together, not just "let's just use the elements to blow someone up" as the Elements are often cited as a "I win" button, and honestly I find that incredibly incorrect. Well it is in some ways, but it was also a way of bonding the Mane 6 in a magical way. It's such a shame this is honestly the last time they're used or really of any relevance if I recall correctly, before being mixed up in MMC and finally, and unfortunately, thrown away in Princess Twilight Sparkle. Honestly, that's one of the worst mistakes the show has ever made. Same with reforming Discord as I think about it, but more on that later. Here he was fine, and just a G rated version of a monster about chaos. Silly, but not obnoxious with references I'd say. Not to mention, the way it tied things about the previous season into this one was really heartwarming. Seeing how MA Larson wrote this, he really should have written more season premiers and finales, not McCarthy.

S2E3 Lesson Zero

I think this was an extremely important episode for the series, as it marked the departure from something which could very well be deemed formuliac soon, that being only Twilight writing to Celestia. This change into the Mane 6 writing to her was the best choice for the show, especially making sure not to let it tread into "Twilight is the only character who matters" territory, which sadly the show seemed to go back in some areas, at least starting with Canterlot Wedding. But that's down the road. What matters now is I like them all writing to Celestia now, that was great.

S2E4 Luna Eclispsed

I remember I originally was disappointed in this one as it didn't have Rari, I wanted to see Rari in a costume! Despairing Rarity Though really, while I thought it was nice to see Luna again, I never quite liked this one, as I guess I didn't really quite agree with the lesson, or how it was portrayed? It didn't quite feel right. I mean, enforcing ponies to be afraid of Luna on Nightmare Night, I don't know, just didn't seem like it was the best idea? I wouldn't say it was a bad episode, just wasn't the best in my book. There's definitely much better this season.

S2E5 Sisterhooves Social

Easily one of my favorite episodes in the series. Maybe not Top 5, but 10 for sure. I just like how it shows Rari's relationship with her sister, and it definitely reminds me of me and my family. I feel like this episode also has a really good stance in terms of one of Rari's own flaws. This is definitely an instance which I feel shows one issue Rari has at times, she tends to often think her way is the best way. And often say this as an example when I get accused of just thinking she's perfect when I claim she acts OOC. She does have flaws, and this episode is a good instance of seeing her overcome them for the sake of her sister.

S2E6 The Cutie Pox

I think this is a really enjoyable Apple Bloom episode, for providing a bit more insight on her character, without making her just "part of the CMC", I feel like this is a good episode on her as it shows her a little more than that. Plus her relationship with Zecora is a good one. I liked it.

I too enjoy this episode, but think it raises some issues of free will vs. destiny which it doesn't properly resolve.

I think it's not an issue of free will vs. destiny because I feel where Apple Bloom was trying to force something, in reality a cutie mark isn't something that destines you for something, more so shows off your talent and where you excel in, while still allowing them to choose their destiny. For example, we all know Rari has diamonds on her butt, but she doesn't work as a miner, she's a fashion designer who only occasionally works with diamonds. It represents them but doesn't entirely define them.

Kind of reminded me of another Hasbro property, the Transformers comics. In the history of the world in the comics, a Transformer's alt-mode was predetermined, and there was a council that claimed that your alt mode determined your social standing and your job type. And how obviously that couldn't be the case at all.
