The Writings and stories of Dr. Dankworth - XXX_LYRA_LOVER_XXX - 04-27-2015

Decided to come up with a pseudonym for writing. I'll mainly publish short stories here, or philosophical parables when I feel like it. I decided to start with a story about a soldier. Please note that I'm very tired when I'm writing this:

A soldier was walking back to his home along a stretch of country road. In the distance, he saw a farmer smoking a pipe alongside his horse drawn cart. Tired, the soldier asked the farmer for a ride, to which the farmer replied, "What more do you want from my family? I fed you, my wife clothed you, my daughter bedded you, and my son saved you. Now you want me to take you?"
The soldier was confused at the old man's response to a rather simple question, and decided to continue walking.
The next man he met was a wealthy doctor, riding slowly along in his carriage. Again, the soldier asked for a ride, and the doctor replied, "How blind must you be? I healed you, the preacher fooled you, the king forced you, and the country controlled you."
The soldier was still confused and scared at both responses, but decided to continue walking.
At dusk, he reached his home fishing village. Expecting to return to a party of sorts, only a single fisherman was out, hauling his boat out of the water and onto the beach. Disappointed at the absence of a celebration, he asked the fisherman why they weren't celebrating his return, to which he replied, "Why must we celebrate the return of a drop to the ocean? The return of a fish to their school? All it allows is more food in the banker's mouth, or another drop of whiskey in the drunkard's bottle. The only thing either can do is wait for the day they amount to something useful, instead of something meaningless."
To this, the soldier cried, as his debts had overwhelmed him.

This writing reminds me a lot of Kahlil Gibran; esoteric, oriented towards wisdom, almost utopian in a way, but clear-eyed.

I hope this won't be the only philosophical parable you publish!

I'll publish more when the inspiration comes to me.
