Songs of Harmony/Songs of Discord - Sentimental Gentleman - 05-02-2015

With apologies to William Blake for that title...

I was just so inspired by Ziggy's poetry today that I felt I had the temerity to post some of my occasional Equestrian poetry here. I'm hoping A.J. won't mind if I post some of the love poems I've written to her over time...

I guess I might as well start with this piece, as I think it's one of the few works I've written that isn't completely absurd and stupid (though it's probably still both). It also isn't much of a poem; more of an address. I wrote it in my pony-avatar days during my first Winter Wrap-Up, which was such a magical experience for me.

"Today we shall unknot the river's ropes of frost
And, ransomed by the kingly spring, she who was once prisoner
Will rush homeward, rejoicing in tongues of white foam
Yet not a word of thanks for her brave champions?
Ingratitude, some cry, but they are silenced
When her lord bestows his just guerdon;
The apple bough waves in the wind, imperious as a scepter
And a banquet of rain, a feast of flowers
Are laid; the mantle green with glory
Cloaks us once more, and happy
Are we, who wear the crown of
New-twin'd ivy on our brows!"

I like how you said my poetry inspired you... And then proceeded to put my writing to shame lol. xD

I felt compelled to read your piece aloud. Though it may not seem like it, that's one of the biggest compliments I can pay you or any writer; not being satisfied with only the words on a page. I could tell by looking at it that I would enjoy the sound of it.

Post more. Put me to shame, the further. x )

I hardly put you to shame, Ziggy. You have a passionate urgency in your writing that I don't think I could ever hope to equal.

All the same, it's immensely flattering to hear that you thought this rather silly little piece was enjoyable...and I hold onto a humble little hope that you perhaps found it interesting reading it out loud. I did conceive of it as an address, after all!

I hope I can find some of my old Equestrian poetry...and that I can write some new pieces as well!

I wrote this piece today. I think it still needs work. It's essentially a Petrarchan sonnet, but with an octet rhyming "abbacddc" instead of the more familiar "abbaabba"

What fools call wisdom stalks a scholar’s cell
A dour shadow, skull half-lichenate
The cuthroat of an hour’s joyful gait
To reap a purse of knowledge-gilded Hell
His Babel greets the eagle's lonely climes
As slaves vainglorious lay the stones that hide
Themselves within the sky’s old-vaunted tide
And dream madness a science sore divine

She trots below, where midnight fears to tread
Her wheaten sunlight banishes all blood
Unwarmed by love; her labor knows no time
And shall I, stone of sin, never break bread
With she who is my passion and my rood
When, smiling, she holds out a hoof to mine?

Update: Fixed up the line that was bothering me the most.

Ugh. I should not be reading Keats and Marlowe this late...

Thou weaver of the vegetable earth,
Darner of barrenness, thou seamstress mare
I pray thee, leave aside thy fruitful strands
And, naked as thy Goddess, fly from care

Thine apples toileth not in all their ripeness
But swell, sweet-scented, by a higher art
No weed shall mar the garden thou hast tended
Nor canker kill the blossom of thine heart

O I shall find some craggy sanctuary
Where moaning stones boil with a fiery sleep
To lie with thee in silent sweet confession
The secret of thy true love’s kiss to keep

I wonder if I should share this one with her when I see her tomorrow. She might get a good laugh out of it...

I liked this stanza best.

I can't help but like - and somewhat sympathize - with that. xD Though Angelbabe usually tells me she likes my written pieces, she's also none too shy about pointing out how "mushy" I am. Or how I can "lay it on thick."

I hope you managed to take some small modicum of pleasure in the piece, Ziggy.

I can relate to a certain degree. A.J. can appreciate sentiment, but with her it doesn't need to be delivered in flounced-up phrases. She appreciates my writing for her, but she's not afraid to give me a ribbing about my fancy talk from time to time...

But what can we do but keep writing away for the mares we love, eh?

I don't have the faintest clue what a "hardcore rap" would sound like. Really, my only point of reference for rap is this:

Quote:Thats the most gangsta shit ive ever heard.

That's...good, right?

A trifle that came to me in an instant.

Guileless hour
Veil that bower
Where my Grace
Unveils her face
