Welcome to the Show - Rares - 05-06-2017

I finally got an idea for a new fic! I'm really excited to start this one because I think it's a great idea, so I'm mainly going to organize this thread to keep track of where I intend to go with it.

"Welcome to the Show" is a working title, and it's a story about the origin of the Dazzlings, from the perspective of Adagio. Since this is all being developed, I'll spoiler my info for anyone who genuinely wants to read it when I start putting stuff up. But you probably know how it's going to end anyway.

Adagio will be a unicorn jeweler, who is constantly doing things for Sonata, who sees her as a close friend despite Adagio really feeling mostly indifferent towards her. Sonata is an earth pony singer who, despite her talent, never really picks up in popularity, and in her mind, Adagio is her only friend. Sonata one day purchases a necklace made by Adagio from gemstones she couldn't quite identify. The truth is, the gems contained the trapped essence of the windegos, the creatures that fed off of pony conflict.

For the first time, Sonata's songs start to increase in popularity, and Adagio catches wind that it's something related to the gem. She fashions her own necklace, and subtly experiments, discovering that the conflict of ponies fuels her magic, but she can't figure out quite yet that through song is the way to harness it. Sonata meanwhile is completely oblivious to any magic going on and thinks she's genuinely becoming famous without any help, she considers the necklace good luck. Aria, a pegasus, starts to snoop, and by the time Adagio discovers music is the way to harness the power of conflict as opposed to just feeding off of it, Aria demands in on it, or she threatens to expose everything.

Begrudgingly, Adagio lets Aria hang out with her and Sonata, but Aria becomes a bit more headstrong about being "evil". Whereas Adagio attempts to keep subtle to avoid getting discovered, while still furthering selfish desires, Aria becomes a bit more obvious. Through this behavior, Aria reveals to Sonata that it was never her talent that caught the attention of others, merely the magic. This effectively breaks Sonata, but rather than saying "I don't want to be famous like that", she really just adopts a mentality of wanting to be liked no matter what, so she sides with Aria, and they both start causing far more obvious havoc together, which finally attracts the attention of Starswirl.

During this conflict, Adagio finally rejoins up with Aria and Sonata and actually manages to turn the tables on Starswirl. Starswirl was the one who originally imprisoned the windegos, but bonded with ponies, in the form of sirens, it proves too much for him to handle. He opts for a last ditch resort where he uses a powerful spell to trap them in the land of EQG.

I figured this would be a good thing to work on, considering how hard it is for me to work on something Rari-related, feeling as if I can't do her justice.

I do look forward to developing this.

So I'm glad to do this, and it was honestly a lot more fun than I originally expected it to be, and I can't wait to do more of it and finish the story. The more I got into it, the more I actually really liked writing Adagio a lot more than a thought. And I have to say I definitely don't feel bad about anything she gets, ha.

I really tried to do what I could to write them as true as I could be, which meant a lot of rewatching bits of them to try to break them down. Not that I'm complaining, they do have fabulous songs. But I think what was the added bonus which made it really interesting to write, was that Adagio really began to come off as, what I found to be, a bitchy perversion of who I am. At least, who I strive to be. So I began to write her as that, a cracked reflection of myself and I think it really worked. Adagio builds up others and makes them feel good about themselves, but not in a way Rarity would, she does it in such a way to make them feel good about themselves, so that they put down others. Rarity builds up ponies so that they can love themselves, Adagio builds up ponies so they look down on others. Plus with how absolutely selfish she is, only focused on receiving adoration at the expense of anyone, with that in mind it made it very interesting to write. It just got to the point where I started saying "Okay if I were a total bitch what would I say?" And I think it turned out well.

I'll end my thoughts with my new favorite Adagio reaction. That face of complete disgust.

I have to say I think you did a really good job capturing adagio in this. Reading it I can tell you put a lot of work into this. I think you've got something pretty good here in the making and I look forward to seeing where you take it.

You really deserve some praise for this idea. It's my favorite origin for the Dazzles, and I'm not just saying that because we're friends. You're also trying to do the idea justice in its execution, so props for that, as well. I can't wait for the next one!

Thank you so much for that, that means am incredible amount to me. Thank you, hopefully I can keep writing it at a better place. I also was afraid this chapter came out poor so I'm glad you liked it.
