I got a painful reminder of some less than pleasant memories and how certain people judge me for it.

It doesn't sound like you want to get in to details, so I won't pry. Instead, accept my condolences, and at the risk of sounding cliche: fuck the haters. It's said that the best way to convert someone to your cause is to give them a target which they can feel righteous about attacking. The normans are just throwing those stones at us because we're socially-acceptable targets, so they can bond over their rejection of the different. So much for the rhetoric of tolerance and open-mindedness which gets bandied about in the west these days. So much for the people who like to think they're progressive and non judgemental.
