I'm actually ok with playing a grindy game, those are some of my favourites tbh :/The community for the game is pretty blah. If you don't have this or this or this weapon or know how to run a certain raid (even if you've never done it), people don't want you in their fireteam. And, when I stopped playing, there were STILL game modes that simply didn't have matchmaking. My friend would always have to go off-site in order to find people that might possibly want to go sit on a certain leg of a raid at length in hopes of maybe getting one particular drop. He ran Crota's End twenty plus times before he got what he really wanted.
Bungie is also obsessed with "balancing" the game and constantly nerf things simply because they're semi-decent or popular with the players. OR, worse yet, because the people who favor pvp complained that they were getting killed by it.
They've introduced microtransactions into the game. I believe there might be some pay-to-win, but the most egregious thing of all is the overpriced and ultimately worthless emotes you're expected to buy. Ridiculous.
There are a number of bugs that negatively affect game play, and there are bugs that actually benefit players. In many cases, Bungie has been unwilling to focus on the former and quick to fix the latter.
Yes, it's grindy. It's grindy AND they place caps on everything. So even if you're all for the grind, you can't do it as much as you might like. The bounties get boring SO quickly; I must have "awakened The Hive..." I can't even say how many times! xD Though at least cut scenes are finally skip-able now. Yes: Cut scenes were not skip-able until "The Taken King."
I spent, over time and in total, $140 on Destiny (base game, The Dark Below, House of Wolves, and The Taken King). People who waited for "The Taken King" only had to pay a fraction of that. Oh, and everything I had that packed any sort of punch was rendered worthless when TTK arrived.
