Embroidery Sucks! Fortunately, there's Twilight!
#1
I've wanted patches of my favorite ponies' cutie marks for a long time. Unfortunately, it turns out custom patches are a lot more expensive than I'd hoped. Well, I'm no stranger to a needle, even though my experience has been mostly limited to clothing repairs, so I decided to give it a try. First up, is Sunset Shimmer, both because she's awesome, and because as a first project, I expected even more troubles than I ended up having.

On the top left, is some brown wool, and an "embroidery hoop" cut from a jello cup and it's lid. Top right is ordinary thread, because nobody had embroidery floss in the color I wanted. And in the middle, is the (finally!!!) completed patch.

A closer shot of the patch. I made it as follows:

1. hand-drew the pattern with a pen
2. back-stitched the outline
3. fish bone-stitched the large ray on the right, and the 2 smaller rays next to it
4. satin-stitched the right halves of the large top and bottom rays
5. whip stitched around the remaining outlines to give them body
6. a rough fill stitch for the left half of the disk, and decided I liked it enough to leave it that way
7. centered the design, and traced the inside of my hoop with a pen
8. cut the patch from the cloth, cut out the darts, and back-stitched the border in place
9. whip-stitched the edging

Most of the time I was making it, Twilight was snuggled in my lap. When I finally finished it, she asked if she could try it on. Well, ok, who better, right? Here she is about to get her model on.

Looking good, hunh? Such a coy little wing-drop there. She's a natural!

Angled away; those legs!

I want to make one of my marefriend's cutie mark too, of course, but holy biscuits, embroidery, especially with normal thread, is not my cup of tea! I need a break from all things sartorial. We hope you all like the patch, and this glimpse in to Twiler's nascent modeling career.
