That Special Time Again
----
Cool autumn air blew over us, rustling the trees overhead, multicolored leaves freely flying away, rustling across the stone path. From here I could make soft but strong orange lights and voices indistinctly chattering away happily. Nightmare Rarity glanced at me out of the corner of eye, nudging me slightly.
"Anxious?"
"A little," I admitted, but of course I knew lying wasn't option, she knew me too well for that. From posture, to gestures, voice tone...even just by the way my brown eyes gleamed. The rays of fading sunlight casting huge shadows from the trees over our own as we walked. "Do you think I should have worn something formal?"
Nightmare rolled her eyes playfully. "Would I deceive you?"
I smiled back, giving her a quick kiss on her lovely lips as my response. What we were going to was not a party, just a simple gathering in honor of the autumn season. She wore her tiara and necklace as usual, hair flowing and gleaming as freely as ever. We stood just outside the entrance to the clearing, sheltered by the trees, lanterns hung on carefully arranged posts, undisturbed by the breeze. Tables set up with refreshments and food, ponies and humans chatting quietly. I felt my unease slip out of me, evaporating like summer rain. There were no formal customs or expectations, just simple enjoyment of time and togetherness.
We hadn't been to many gatherings since we had gotten together, she promised me this one was a far cry away from the stuffy formal events, but not a loud, obnoxious party. Just something quiet and enjoyable all the same.
Raising my hand delicately to her cheek, lightly turning her face to my own, my fingers registering the soft black fur, eyes meeting hers before I kissed her sweetly and slowly. Savoring the moment, the feeling of her lips, her scent, the peacefulness. Every day and night we had together was a special, unique thing that neither of us would stop cherishing.
We turned our attention back to the gathering, and draping my arm over her shoulders lovingly, we proceeded in.
"Excuse me," a small voice piped up behind us, we saw it was from a small pony with a big camera around her neck. "Do you mind if I get a picture? It's just you two look so happy together."
Nightmare and I glanced at each other a moment, we both already knew the answer.
"Of course."
The pony smiled cheerfully, hooves arranging the camera as Nightmare and I slid down to the grass carefully, her partially in my lap, my arms wrapped her and drawing her closer. My chin resting on her head, the familiar scent of her exquisitely soft mane drifting up to me as in a bright flash, our moment was physically immortalized. Just the two of us.
As it was meant to be.
