I'm never going to believe in the "goodness of humanity." I'd rather be a misanthrope than drink the poison of false hope.

I think there's a better hope in the goodness of individual people, rather than just "goodness of humanity". Because I think a good individual can overwhelm a large number of negative actions of others. I think that's more powerful, than just assuming humanity is naturally good.
