Humans, like most animals, are neutral. But with their greater intelligence comes the ability to define good and evil, and enact upon that.
Bad things happen, and bad people do exist. There are a lot of jerks out there. But there are good people as well. If there were not, charities, community projects, law, friendship, these would not exist. It is important to open ones scope and see both the bad and the good of the world. Focusing too much on either leads to inaction. Looking only at the bad is bound to cause all sorts of issues with social interaction, self-esteem, and mood, while focusing solely at the good can lead to complacency and inaction, with problems being unsolved and the world growing stale and unchanging.
TLDR; There's both good and bad in people, it is wise to not dismiss either.
