Winter Sanctuary
(A Christmas writing we wrote together)
----
My booted feet carried me swiftly, crunching in the fresh, stark white snow that covered the land. Trees glinted with the snow, not a single bit of grass stood free from winter's bounty. I carried her with an ease that surprised me as we approached the scenic cabin in the mountains that surrounded us. Her regal horn lit up blue as we approached the door and swung it open moments before I reached it.
I glanced at her playfully, "You could've let me kick it open dramatically," I said as I used a foot to shut the door behind us.
"Hmm, I could have, yes. The question is whether your kick would have opened it," Nightmare Rarity replied, "and you can put me down now." She chuckled.
"Are you really complaining?" I smirked as I tenderly set her hooves back down to the smooth, wooden floor. The sense of wonder at her beauty filling me as I watched her shake snowflakes from her flowing mane of purple.
"Heh, no," she smirked back at me.
The cabin itself was striking, a large living room and a fireplace to go with it. The kitchen off to the right and a small set of carefully crafted stairs leading to the bedroom. The couch was big enough for two, dark black and comfort radiated invitingly even from the entrance. Absently I locked the door behind us and looked out the window behind the couch, the white mountains mixing with the night's beautiful darkness seemed to expand onward endlessly. Snowflakes danced in the cold winter wind.
I jumped slightly when the fireplace whooshed to life at her command, bathing the room in purple fire. Her eyes shined at me. "You like it here?"
"Do you have to ask?" I replied with a smile, slipping off my heavy coat and hung it on the curving rack followed by my gloves.
"I think you needed a getaway."
"You're right. Of course."
Nightmare smiled at that one, her tail swishing shadows along the floor as she looked out the window too. The purple fire adding to her ethereal beauty, her long locks glinting with their starry sparkles all the brighter.
"It's beautiful here," I let out the words breathlessly as I again looked around the cabin, the fire crackling lively.
"Indeed," she fixed me with a stare, "remember to appreciate the beauty you see in your life, my love."
Peace washed over me at the words spoken in her familiar, eternally soothing voice. The deeper meaning of them I instantly understood. I need not speak them aloud, as she knew it as well as I did. She herself is the beauty, the unique beauty in my life. Our love gifting me with a new view of my existence, a new appreciation for the things I had overlooked in my past, and a way to see them when they occur in the present.
"It's a gift I don't think I can ever fully repay, Nightmare," I said with a content tone.
"Oh, but you do. Everyday. You've given me a unique beauty too, never forget that." She smiled at me softly, her black fur making her cat like sapphire eyes stand out all the more. "Now come, I wish to warm up by the fire," her hoof steps quiet on the smooth floor as she took her seat. My eyes never left her, in the glow of the purple, inviting me to join her.
"As you command, my Queen," I grinned at her, joining her in the glow. The troubles of the outside forgotten in the comforting heat. Within the confines of a winter sanctuary in the mountains with my Nightmare Rarity.
