S3E13 Magical Mystery Cure
Wow. There's a lot to address in this one.
First off, this episode wasn't bad. Honestly I disliked Twilight's Kingdom so much more than this, and I think most of the bad rep for this, as well as the rest of the season, comes from the shitstorm of drama with implications that Twilight is a Princess, when it has far calmed down now because for better or for worse, they have not really done all that much with it now, and she hasn't really changed. But that's a different story. What I think really at least makes the episode bearable is the stellar use of songs. They were what really made it a bit more enjoyable to watch. The plot itself wasn't bad, except the question should be raised why Twilight's own element wasn't affected in the scrambling, and I think separating that from the princess aspect would have made for a much better episode. Which leads us to the bulk of the problem: This episode should have been a two-parter. Either that awful Games Ponies Play episode should have been dumped, or they should have scrapped Crystal Empire. The main problem of the episode was solved in the first 12 minutes, with the remaining 10 devoted to Twilight ascending. And I'm sorry to all you Twi-lovers, but on that basis alone, Twilight did not deserve to be a Princess. Maybe with a little more, but here's what honestly should have been reworked: MMC should have been the season premier at one episode, simple plot and could have been solved on it's own, and maybe Crystal Empire should have been tweaked, especially with the Twilight's test part (and I mean especially, you already saw my thoughts of that) to make it appear more natural for it to happen. As it stands, I still maintain Celestia as shown in the show has a heavy unfair bias towards Twilight.
And that was the big problem of S3 if anything, it continues to this growing power gap between Celestia, Twilight, and the Mane 5. But more on that as it worsens in other seasons, especially in the future finales of the show. In comparison, at least they did something in this, and if it was tweaked, it could have been on part with Best Night Ever.
But S3 wasn't that bad upon hindsight, and again, I feel like it was the drama storm as well as the shorter season length. Honestly I was more disappointed with what I've seen of future seasons, but this season had its moments (despite a lack of a certain pony's episode...). If this season had more to it, or consisted of the first half of S4 to fill up it, it would have been held in a much higher regard I'm sure. This season did push that Celestia bias, but it definitely worsens in S4, but more on that later. This was just way too rushed with Twilight, and I think it would have been better spent if they waited to make it the theme of S4 instead.
