So the job I wanted most, the job I worked the hardest to get, has completely passed me up in favor of "other candidates". I'm pretty depressed, and I'm starting to think that self-employment may be my only answer.

I'm sorry. I can only imagine how you feel. The best thing I can say is, I'm sure you heard the phrase "When God closes a door he opens a window." I do believe that always holds true. I know it may not seem like it now, but perhaps this happened so a better oppurtunity will open down the road. Good will come your way, it always does in the end.
