At the end of the day, the writers are still human. They can make fumble ups and screw ups, and some have openly admitted they know there are some who never watched the show. Sometimes it's just the truth that we know them better than the writers.
Honestly to follow it as law, if that canon bothers you, is it really good for you?

Treat show canon as law could take entire fan into danger place .You're exactly right too. Plus you have things like animation errors, it may sound dumb but is that canon? Derpy became "canon", but does that mean Rarity being an alicorn because she was for a few frames canon too? What about stupid gags? It's just too much to get picky about, and then the truth is, can you really give me a good reason as for the difference between fanfiction and a show writer? There isn't one, exceot one is just paid to do it. That's it.
If writer copy a fanfiction into show , the fanfiction can become a canon , is not the problem make sense , the show canon or not really depending on if it is in the show or not ... like season 5 Episode 9 , fanon finally in the show , but even writer didn't do that ... fan is still have threir own canon .
So when you recognize the different between canon and other independent , you'll know show canon is not really 100% law .
The stuff with gags are great, because who remembers Rainbow Dash basically nuking a barn with no injury, and then later getting injured on basically nothing? Or how about when she fought a changeling army no problem, but when she encounters a villainous pony on an adventure she's captured without a fight? These are things that don't make sense, they exist because what's being watched is a cartoon and trying to force canon into logic won't work. I approached the discussion with logic, and we met with "It's a cartoon so all of the nonsense the writers say is gospel truth when it comes to ponies." No, it's not, fellow. Very often they make huge mistakes and ignore facts they've previously stated just to make an episode work.
I will say that alicorn Rarity made for some amusing fanfictions during its course in the fandom. And I'm sure a dozen people were raging about it "just being a mistake" despite it making it to air. Things would be dreadfully dull if we only ever used the canon.
