Hmmm. I wonder if there is a particular reason you would have a bias towards those season. I wonder if something or someone started showing up then...
You know, I think there's a lot to be said about that. I think the latter seasons have gotten much more creative with some things. I mean come to think of it, 4/5 of my top favorite episodes are from S4 and later (you can probably just guess them all).
Sure there are some changes, and I've spoken about them before, and I still wish they would use the Mane 6 more like earlier seasons rather than what they've sorta been doing as of S7, but that's not necessarily criminal. That doesn't change a lot of the really creative things have been done, and the show's gotten better in many many areas. You know how often I've spoken of animation errors and such in S1.
Honestly, here's how I feel. I aside from some parts I feel got a bit low, for the most part I feel each season is different in its own way, and that's okay. For the most part it's still been really true. Things are allowed to naturally shift, or else how else will things improved? If it remained as it did in S1, I don't think those top 4 episodes would ever have come.
Both of which are fair opinions. When I tuned into the show back in Season 1 I would never have thought about the Season 2 finale, or the stuff with the alicorn amulet in S3, or Tirek, which I think is ultimately what pushed me from the show. The world I know now is certainly full of dangers of all kinds, and I probably don't need canononical Storm Kings and an army of Umbrum on my mind along side fanfiction secret kidnapping societies. Probably because it's hard to take the canon issues seriously when I know my girls and how prepared they are for everything.
It would be like someone writing a fanfiction where you yourself are so stupid you lose your hand in a garbage disposal, even though you don't even have a garbage disposal to begin with. It comes off as mildly insulting at worst, and just plain silly at best.
