In high school, college, and for 5 or so years after, I played mostly first person shooters and highly competitive games. I was content when I made it to diamond rank in Starcraft II because it meant that I was better than most players at the game.
Ever since I started working in a more highly paid and stressful position, I stopped playing FPSs and competitive games entirely. The only games I play are the ones you can play casually at your own pace.
The ones that you can pick up and put down at any time without having to be somewhere at a certain time due to a clan meeting or a competitive match.
I did play MOBAs until fairly recently, that was the last bit of competitive games that I played and I didn't really play them competitively. I never really worked hard to do my best or focus on winning. Usually distracted by other things which of course leads my team to just get frustrated or angry with me for making simple mistakes because I'm always thinking about something other than the game.
The kind of games I play now are the kind of games that I used to hate. Those games that have hours and hours of grinding. However, when I do the grinding I'm always thinking about other things like my house, my car, work, or people at work, family, my own health, money, financial investments, 401k, taxes, things I need to do, life goals, travel plans, where to go for vacation, recent events, things that were on the news, etc. Just a lot of things to think about. So hours and hours of grinding pretty much mindlessly just fly by but you still get something out of it like higher levels, rare items, being more relaxed, or whatever.
