I almost never get upset, but when I do I end up spending the entire weekend thinking about it. Waking up in the middle of the night pacing the house for hours. Taking notes on what I'm going to do and how I'm going to handle it when I get back to work.
I've been working at my current job for 7 years and there's only 2 times to date that I was really upset and both times were on the job.
The first time
Due to being in this position for so long, part of my job responsibilities is to review and approve work done by my coworkers. This is not something that I particularly enjoy doing but apparently damn good at it so that's how it became one of my job responsibilities. I'm 35 and we recently hired this 50 year old man. Being there longer it ended up being my responsibility to review and approve his work. I am not his boss. I'm a team leader that makes sure the work does not leave our team until it is of the proper quality and has the proper reviews.
So anyway, some of this guy's work comes across my desk and it did not follow our standard operating procedures so I immediately sent it back to him to fix it. I referenced the standard operating procedure that wasn't followed. So instead of fixing it, this guy comes over to my desk and he starts talking down to me saying that I need to approve this because it's urgent and i'm wasting time, making "busy work", and creating delays for an important customer.
As I explained to him, the fact that his work doesn't meet our standards of quality is not my problem. I don't have the time to fix his work, and he needs to go back and fix it himself and resubmit.
Then he gets right in my face and tells me "Here's what you're going to do...." Basically ordering me to sign off and approve something that is a pile of shit. At this point, I'm just done dealing with him and I tell him I'm too busy right now, I'll look at it later.
Inside I'm boiling. There is no way in hell I'm going to ruin my own reputation by approving a pile of shit. Stamp my name right on that pile of shit and pass it on as if it's an example of perfection. Lots of my coworkers overheard that conversation and they've always played by the rules. If it doesn't meet our quality standards, I kick it back to them, they fix it with no complaints, and I approve it. That's how the system works. That's how it's worked for years. It's never been a problem.
So anyway, the problematic coworker comes back to my desk and asks about it. So I open it up on my computer as if I can't even remember seeing it before and then point out to him right on the screen where it is lacking. So then he again just gets in my face and says "That's all bullshit and you know it. I'm going to talk to our manager and see what he has to say about this. The customer always comes first and you're creating the problem." .. So I'm like fine. You go do that. He talks to our manager and I get called into a 1 on 1 with my manager. He asks me what's going on here. I tell him exactly as it is.. The developers don't want it approved until it meets the quality standards and it's fully documented. It isn't yet so it's in my coworker's work bucket to fix, not mine.
Then my manager says tells me that the coworker reviewed it again and said there was absolutely nothing wrong with it and I'm just giving him trouble. Which once again, makes me boil. So then my manager says let's get the Development manager in here and see what he says about it. I'm like. Ok, I'm just following the guidelines that they made. Of course the development manager is in another building right now so I had to stress about this for the next 4 hours. Then we had a nice meeting with my manager, the development manager, and me, to review that documents that I refuse to approve.
So then during that meeting, the development manager looked at it. He looked at me, looked at my manager, then back at the document. And he says, "we can't work with this, it needs to go back to draft". FUCkIN' THANK YOU!
I got the privilege of going over to my coworkers desk to inform him that "Your work has skipped the review process because you told our manager and me that there was no problems with it. But then it got rejected by development because it actually did have significant problems. Also, any work you submit will go through the proper review process just like it does for everybody else that works here."
It was glorious.
So for a while there I felt relief, but then I felt angry again at that coworker. Screw that guy for trying to make me do something that I knew was wrong. For trying to ruin my reputation and worse trying to ruin my own self respect. Trying to get me to sign off on something that was garbage while everything the other coworkers were working on got kicked back to them for much smaller issues than this had. Also, the nerve and disrespect for this coworker to get up in my face like that. Just really upsetting. So yea, that's the story on how that guy became the only guy in the entire company, across all our locations, that I don't like.
