The sweltering sun curls the corners of the dashboard
And I sit with a smile on my face 
As precious moments together I hoard
And just as the signpost instructs
We take the last exit toward

Some tiny, forgotten cow town
On the edge of the frontier
And as we drive the downtown, there’s not a soul around
And we fret we may hit empty
Until that glowing, black square in the sky is found

With a tank freshly full of sixty six
And a cup holder full of crisp refreshments
We can rejoin the road and get our kicks
And as the gritty smell of the midwest comes in through the vent
We rest assured that by journey’s end we’ll have our fix

How good it is to see the highway
Shiny and onyx as if it was laid yesterday
A strand of dark pearls sprayed
With the jaunty line of yellow stripes
Succeeds in releasing my nerves from their fray

And as we disappear over a golden horizon
Silhouetted by the shadows of the falling eve
We will both keep our eyes fixed on
The joy that lays before us
In that great beyond
