Anime

There might already be a thread buried somewhere about Anime, but I would assume many of us are also into it.

What kind of amines do you like? Any recommendations/links?

My taste is pretty vanilla and mainly due to what I liked as a kid. I'm pretty obsessed with Naruto, and also really love Dragon Ball. I also have really enjoyed Beastars and am looking forward to the next season.

Also, who would win: Naruto or Mr. PoPo?

Naruto and Dragon Ball are really fun! I like those two a lot too, and I've yet to see Beastars.

I've watched a heck of a lot of anime at this point, even though I might not watch very much nowadays. I'll post a little bingo card with my favourites if you're looking for recommendations!

I would always recommend Kaiji, NHK and especially Steins;Gate. Twilight Smile

I have a complicated relationship with anime. I grew up loving it, but then in my teen years, I started hating it for a few reasons (some were good reasons, but others were pretty stupid I'll admit) but now idk. I wouldn't call myself an anime fan (or hater anymore) but I have seen two animes that I loved, Serial Experiments Lain and Future Diary.

When it comes to Japanese art and media, I'm honestly more into kaiju and tokusatsu and by that extension Japanese films as a whole. My criteria for whether I give an anime a shot is whether or not there's a lovely lady who I want to see more of. Haha. If the story and thematic elements are good that's a bonus.

That said, I would comfortably say that Darling in the Franxx is my all time favorite. For one thing, it gave me Zero Two. But I also adore how it portrays romantic and platonic connections with such raw passion and sincerity. If all art had that kind of soul, the world would be a better place. I've re-watched it every year since 2018 and it never fails to get some kind of emotional reaction from me. Namely episodes 12-15. First time the emotions were so powerful that night I had four out of body experiences one after another. The first re-watch was after my mother passed away and re-visiting the show was a healing experience for me.

I prefer to view episodes 13-15 in one sitting. Episode 15 to this day is one of the most powerfully uplifting things I've ever had the privilege of watching. Truly something special.

And yes, for the record, I love the second half of the show. I don't care what anyone says.

For anime films, I love Angel's Egg and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

Most recent anime watch was season one of Attack on Titan (late to the party, I know). My first exposure to AoT was the film duology directed by Shinji Higuchi, and personally I really enjoyed the films as a fan of kaiju and tokusatsu; as well as being a fan of Higuchi. Mostly started watching the show because Mikasa (she's pretty, shush), but once the story got rolling I got into it. Love all the classic kaiju influence on the Titans. Final fight of season one felt like something straight out of classic kaiju films and TV, the writer said he was influenced by the genre and it really shows in its presentation.

Hopefully this doesn't come across as a ramble. Haha. Oh well.

I've started To Your Eternity, which was originally written by the same author who wrote Koe no Katachi I think, and so far it's pretty heart-wrenching. I'm invested, and I think there's a second season airing later this year!
