I'll say one thing about Kaiju films (Godzilla, specifically): There isn't any other genre where I consistently root for the character who could easily be perceived as the antagonist.

I don't watch comics-based films hoping for the supervillain to prevail, and I don't watch crime dramas hoping that the perpetrator gets away. I'm on the respective sides of superheroes and law enforcement in those cases. But when humanity tries to stop Godzilla in his tracks, I root for the giant monster tearass-ing its way through a city and leaving destruction and death in its wake. Why? Because the giant monster is cool.

Today marks fifty years of Gamera. Forgive me if this post drags or isn't perfectly put together or something, as I have not had what you'd call a good night. But at least I have this to celebrate. The fiftieth anniversary of my favorite kaiju and perhaps my favorite character in cinema.

I'm honestly not entirely sure what has made Gamera become so significant to me. Certainly I find him to be a compelling and unique character, I guess on a personal note I could say I find him relatable in a way I never did with Godzilla. I find the themes and messages inspiring and rather uplifting, the stories creative and compelling or on the Showa end of things whacky and fun.
In a way I feel like Gamera was a cinematic rebirth for me. Watching the trilogy for first time, especially the third, opened my eyes. Without Gamera I definitely wouldn't appreciate the kaiju genre as a whole as much as I do now. Perhaps he's what taught me to give less popular things a chance, you never know what greatness you can find.
So, here's to Gamera, The Absolute Guardian Of The Universe.

Godzilla's appearance here is largely based off of the original 1954 look, cranked up to eleven, obviously.

Also it's confirmed Godzilla will have at least three different forms. What we're seeing here is him severely injured. Possibly by the atomic body...some have suggested that in this universe he survived the Oxygen Destroyer from the first movie and is healing from that. More detail here.

For any anime fans out there, Hideaki Anno is directing along with Shinji Higuchi.

I'm excited about Higuchi being involved (I know nothing about Anno as I'm not an anime fan), he does a lot of great visual effects. Notably the Gamera trilogy. Some of the best visuals I've seen in movies.

This new Godzilla should be visually outstanding.

Anno was the main man behind the 90s anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is arguably the best giant-robot-fighting anime ever made. It's also one of my favourite shows, so knowing he's on board with this project is actually pretty exciting for me!
