I'm sure you're not doing yourself justice with your recorder skills...but as for ukulele's, they're a pretty easy instrument to pick up and play and you can get a basic plastic one really cheaply.

This is back when I actually played on a regular basis... And most resembled an island-stranded castaway.

I deliberately picked melodies that fell within a certain note range. Because I couldn't competently manage the alto's lower range nor the soprano's higher range.

But I just put this item on my Amazon wish list:

Something about it just appeals to me. Hmmm...
