Portrayal and perceptions.

Holy shit a new thread from me.

Anyway, to get to the point of this thread, I'm asking several questions.

-How important is "canon" to you from the media that features your lover? It's no secret that some people's perceptions of and their lover differs from what the show (or comics or whatever) differs from the so called "canon."

-How do you feel about the "popular" portrayal of your lover in the fandom itself. Since fanbases love to latch onto popular concepts.

As for my own answers:

-"Canon" isn't really that important to me for the most part (save for what I deem accurate and like enough)...this was issue I had to deal with regarding the recent episode of MLP. I was fearful it'd ruin the perception of Nightmare I have. Luckily it did not contradict it much, but I came to accept the idea that what the show says isn't relevant to what I think of Nightmare anymore. She's alive, her own mare, a show certainly can't change that.

-The popular fandom ideas are something I mostly ignore...let's not get me started on the whole idea of "Princess Luna is Nightmare" because most of you know my thoughts on that. And I'd rather not rant on and on.

However, one thing that I do find to be a bit tiresome is the vastly overdone portrayal of Nightmare that shows her to be some broken hearted, fragile mare who just wants to be understood. When all canon points to the contrary. I'd personally like to see more art of her being the ruthless and terrifying conqueror she's shown to be. Or at the very least scary. Powerful.

Canon definitely has its place, especially with less well-developed characters; however, the show inevitably may try to define them in unforeseen ways. But canon shouldn't really matter when conflicts of that nature occur, because the character you fell in love with is no longer defined by the show.

I only have a couple issues with the way Twiley is portrayed in the fandom, but really when I see the stuff that "triggers" me I typically just ignore it. Tho some friends are aware of my Twi Triggers and love pushing those buttons lol

Good way of putting it. I accept the Nightmare Rarity arc and her Fiendship is Magic as canon, though I've realized Nightmare is no longer defined by the cartoon nor comics.

I struggled with stuff like a few months ago, it's gotten easier to ignore the bad stuff, fortunately.

I haven't watched the show since season 3, so the canon really doesn't have any affect on my any more. I find the goings on in my own wonderland far more interesting than any episode summary I've read anyway.
Soul of the mind, key to life's ether. Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel. Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended. So the world might be mended.

I've pretty much gotten to this point myself. Hell the only thing MLP related I got incredibly excited about was Nightmare Moon's comic.

I went to Equestria after the end of season 2. I've watched since then in case there's anything neat I could add. They have cool concepts sometimes.

My Equestria has always been different from the show, but unlike my other wonderland, which I haven't touched, Equestria's kind of my playground. I edit things all the time for fun. Mostly tiny things, or even temporary, like the time I made Rainbow a lesbian for April Fools, but sometimes big things.

Let me know if you need anything. I'm here to help.

Also, feel free to drop by my AMA.

I've noticed a reoccurring thing of there not being a Tirek in different Equestria's. Interesting.

Pretty much how I feel about the majority of fandom portrayal and perception of Nightmare.

(Though I've gotten much better at not letting it bother me)

Luna is an interesting case because her personality in the show is different from her personality in the comics. Even though the comics aren't canon, my Tulpa is based more on that portrayal because she shows a much wider range of emotions there. Luna in the show is a little too dour imo, but that doesn't 'bother' me on a personal level.

I'm neither here nor there on it. Sometimes fandom stuff can give you inspiration, but I don't resent those who come up with things I disagree with.

I think this is a good thread. I will necro it.

Canon to me is just a set of guidelines so to say. Some that make sense, some that are a bit out there. At the end of the day, the show is written by human beings, and I think taking that as law over how I feel is silly. Sure there are elements that I feel are "canon" and I let that set up my own guidelines so to say based on what I felt was established to me in terms of who she is. Something like "It isn't the Mane Thing About You" definitely falls in line with what I know about her behavior, while something like "Carts Before the Ponies" definitely does not. So I basically honestly just pick and choose, because that makes me happy. And it's not hurting anyone, so really, what skin is it off of anyone's nose so long as I don't force it upon others?

Fandom perspectives, I must say, never cared for them. I can't think of any I take from that.
