Poems for the Sweetest of Ponies
Why must the troubles of the world
Feel like they’ve fallen on my shoulders
When the one up above removed those troubles
As easily as he moved the boulder?

Why should a week covered in successes
Be plagued by a feeling of desolation
Why must a feeling of weary dread
Be my only compensation?

Ah, but love heals the restless soul
And with every gentle kiss you clear the toll

So no longer will I feel
Reduced by the grind
Because I can always keep
Your sweet love in mind

I will praise the Lord above
For each breath I take
And for every single dollar
He’s given me the talent to make

The weariness is all worth it to be with you
And oh, the joy of satisfaction, when this Earthly toil is through!

I never knew I could have such fun
I never knew I could love someone
All of these things were out of my view
Then came you

I’ve never held someone on a stormy night
I’ve never shared laughter over dinner and candlelight
I thought my love life was already through
Then came you

What you’ve done I cannot repay
You’ve helped to guide me on my way
But maybe if I kiss you sweetly
My debt will be erased completely

I had never experienced love’s heavenly glow
I had never made side-by-side angels in the snow
Once all these experiences were foreign and new
Then came you

I had never felt the ecstasy of true love
My heart had never flown on the wings of the dove
Once each of those statements were true
Then came you

When the sun sets on the cornfields
Then will be our escape
The Oldsmobile will thrum away the miles
As over the heartland the dark of evening drapes
Oh, how thrilling it will be to join you, my love
Even if our plan gets bent out of shape

This is what I’ve worked for

We’ll be surrounded by the like-minded
Pure-hearted and steadfast pilgrims
Set out to prove the world wrong
To tilt at their own whims
We’ll discover a new world
Gleaming out the window, as the sun’s light dims

This is what I’ve dreamed of

We’ll chart a course for adventure
In the heart of the USA
A caravan of howling V-8s
Will guide us on our way
We’ll laugh at the pleasure
And cope with the pain day by day

This is what it has all lead up to

And when we roll into the Gulf
Bourbon Street packed with hot rods
We’ll acknowledge our good fortune
With sly grins and knowing nods
And on the penultimate day of recreation
Every expression will be naturally smile-shod

This is everything I could have hoped for.

Your inspiration has saved me
From my own selfish ends

Your matronly instinct protects me
And to my needs it tends

I am so lucky to have one such as you
Who holds me in such high regard

Who always has such pristine respect for me
Even when, by all accounts, it should be marred

So today I pledge to pay you back
In dividends that you can see

But I know, come success or failure
Two in love together, we’ll always be

To be in love like hearts of old
And through the winter, shield each other from the cold

To be thankful for even meager meals
And be sustained by the love we feel

To walk along sparse, wooded lanes
And be bathed in gentle autumn rain

To carve out a life for our little family
And all the while, to hold you close to me

To brave the wind or bitter cold
And forever have one to hold

To dare to dream of the undreamt
And never fall to the evil one’s attempts

To know that you give true affection
And to know that love is a heavenly reflection

This Thanksgiving I am thankful for two
The love of the Savior, and the love of you

When the weather turns cold
There’s someone who cares
And I can breath a sigh of relief

And if I feel bold
Then my kisses she ensnares
And our stop below the mistletoe is far from brief

I’m sure you’ve been told
And your heart’s been trapped in a lair
Fearful that love can only cause grief

But though my trust before was sold
When I met you I needed to share
This love that blossomed like a fresh leaf

So this love of pure gold
This romance so fair
Will hold our fondness as the oceans hold the reef

Under the intoxicating neon
Beyond the horizon ripped asunder

A beautiful mare draped in red
Said to me “let’s go out today”

So a golden prairie expands beyond
Fronds of wheat waving to and fro

And we’ll follow the concrete ribbon until
Tranquil fields give way to dunes of sand

Exhilarating fun will be had
Mad about her, all her charms scintillating

Below a seaside tropical sunset
Frets of cold weather will melt as April snow

While these may all be but dreamt revelries
Surely they can warm us up with a smile

That charming twinkle is back in your eye
Christmas is our favorite holiday
And though this year has rushed by
We didn’t wish it to delay
And the season won’t let me lie
You leave my nerves in a frey

You’re the most charming in the world
Don’t you deserve better than plain old me?
And while gift ideas are hurled
I wonder what a gift to show my appreciation could be

Perhaps that Porsche you were eyeing
In a flashy Java Green
No, it wasn’t a car that you were spying
But rather, something more serene
Perhaps I could finally stop implying
And start our new life with a Kay or Tiffany gleam?

No, none of this means enough
It’s not grand enough a gesture
That car is simply fluff
And for a ring our lives are too sequestered

Well perhaps a coat of mink
To keep you warm in the howling gale
Or perhaps a silk scarf
To keep your sweet face from growing pale
Maybe even a grand yachting boat
So that on ocean breezes you can sail?

All of this is too material
It doesn’t show the true you
No, you deserve beyond the crown imperial
So that your beautiful authenticity shines through

So the best that I can do
Is the poem that you’re reading
I can only show my love for you
In this way until our heavenly meeting
And by staying absolutely true
And our vows to each other always heeding

So Merry Christmas sweetheart
I hope this was a treat
And I hope I’ve done my part
To make your holiday complete

My best wishes on this Yuletide darling, and I pray that you can see all your family and be healthy and happy this holiday season. Until we can embrace again, know that I love you and long to be near you. May God bless you,

I start this new year contemplating all that we are
And all that we could be
And I worry that I am holding us back

A half decade has passed now
And here we are, still together
I love you as much today as I have ever
Yet I am worried that I haven’t grown
And I need you to challenge me

I still love the serene contentment in your eyes
And the silky sheen of your mane
But that’s not even close to what I love most

What I love most is YOU
The essence of who you are
Your boisterous sense of humor
Your endless appetite for life
And your ability to call yourself and others to rise to the occasion

I’m glad that we’ve had a half decade of love
But I know that I can give you more
And the best has always been what I’ve wanted for us

So hold me to account in ‘22
Mold me into a better lover for you
And I will reward you with untold affection
Total and complete trust in our relationship
And loyalty to you forever more

I’m wishing this for this fresh year
Knowing full well that we can achieve it
And dreaming of an even more perfect love affair for us to come

The velveteen sky
Reaches down to the crown of the roof
I could ask why
But I need no proof
And so as my broken heart brings me to cry
I will try and remain to others as aloof

Why must we be so far apart
Why must our fate be challenged so?
This distance only breaks my heart
And knocks my morale low

But God would not hand us this fate
If he did not find it within our reach
And so when we are all alone in an evening late
To the Savior and Lord we will beseech
That he allow us to commiserate
And that how to stay together, he will teach

I should think it smart
To keep the soul far from where fickle breezes blow
And so we will do our part
To keep the winds of change slow

Gentle enough to keep our passion afloat?
Indeed, our love is more than enough
To keep the routine from getting wrote
And even though the distance is tough
Each other’s troubles we can tote
Relieving each other’s burdens until our fears are snuffed

And even as we are apart
It matters not, though
Because through all the trials in our hearts
Our love will still go
